Design and Manufacture of Steel Warren Truss Footbridge

thumb_blandf_2As part of the planning application for the Beaumont Park housing development at Blandford Forum in Dorset, the developer agreed to provide a footbridge across the A350 Blandford Bypass to link the houses with an open space designated for sports pitches.

The design brief from Dorset County Council was to produce an aesthetically pleasing structure with a ‘light’ appearance. Intaspan were asked to design a suitable structure and after considering various options recommended a Warren truss steel bridge with a span of 33m and a width of 2.7m which made it suitable for foot and cycle traffic.

After manufacture and painting the bridge had to be transported to site for erection over a weekend with a road closure in operation. An 80 tonne crane was used to lift the bridge from the delivery vehicle and position it onto the existing foundations. With two teams operating, one on each side of the road and communicating by two-way radio the bridge was lowered into position.

The end result is an impressive structure which has met with the approval of the client, Dorset County Council and local residents.
